Uptime

Check that your sites answer, keep count of outages and show them to customers on a status page.

A monitor opens an address of your site at regular intervals and records every check: whether it answered and how fast. When the site does not answer it opens an incident, and closes it when the site is back. If you want, your customers see the status on a public page.

Create a monitor

Each project has one monitor per environment, so the live site and the test one are followed separately.

  1. Declare the environment on the project (for example production): a monitor can only point at a declared environment.
  2. Open Infrastructure → Uptime and press New monitor.
  3. Pick project and environment, then the Check type:
    • HTTP: opens a public web address;
    • Port (TCP): checks that a port on a server is open;
    • DNS: checks that a domain name resolves;
    • Ping: checks that the machine answers.
  4. Adjust the settings and press Create monitor.

The main settings:

FieldWhat it is for
MethodGET or HEAD
Expected statusthe answer that counts as good, for example 200
Expected keywordif the page does not contain this word, the check fails (not with HEAD)
Interval (s)how many seconds between checks
Timeout (s)how long without an answer before the check counts as failed
Failed checks before alerthow many failed checks in a row declare the site down; 2 by default
Slow response threshold (ms)alerts when the site answers, but slower than this; empty = off
SSL expiry warning (days)alerts when the HTTPS certificate has at most this many days left; empty = off

Internal or private addresses are blocked: the monitor checks only what can be reached from outside.

Pause stops the monitor from checking and alerting. The history stays. Resume turns it back on.

Incidents

An incident opens by itself when checks fail in a row, and closes as soon as the site answers again. You find them in the Incidents tab.

You can tell customers what is going on:

  1. On the monitor's page, tick the incident and press Update status.
  2. Pick the phase: Detected, Investigating, Applying fix, Monitoring, Resolved.
  3. Write a message, or keep the ready-made one, and press Post update.

If one outage produced several windows close together, tick them together: they become a single incident. From the row menu, Manage incident adds more steps or splits them again with Ungroup.

Availability

For each monitor you see the share of time the site answered (SLA) over the last 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days and a year. A strip of coloured blocks shows when it was up, down or partial. Grey blocks are periods with no checks.

Monitor groups

A group brings together monitors, even from different projects, for example "Critical services". It has a name, colour, icon and a description shown on its status page.

Open Uptime → Uptime groups and press New group. If you delete a group, its monitors stay, without a group.

Public status page

Every monitor and every group can have a public page, where customers see whether the service works and the incidents with their updates. It stays off until you turn it on.

  1. Open the monitor and press Publish. For a group: Publish status page.
  2. The link shows up on the page, with Open and Copy.
  3. Unpublish takes it down whenever you want. For a group: Unpublish status page.

Infrastructure → Status page lists everything you made public.

Show the status on your site

Once the status page is published, press Embed. A window opens with two ready-made pieces of code:

  • Compact badge: a small strip with the status, for the bottom of your site's pages. Clicking it opens the full page.
  • Full page: the whole status page inside one of your own pages.

Copy the code and paste it where you want it to appear. It refreshes itself on every load. If you unpublish, code already pasted stops showing anything.

Announce maintenance

The Status banner appears at the top of a monitor's public page. Use it for maintenance or a notice to customers.

  1. Open the monitor and go to the Status banner.
  2. Pick the Level: Info, Maintenance or Warning.
  3. Write the message, for example "Scheduled maintenance from 2 to 4 am".
  4. If you want, set Starts at and Ends at: the banner shows only in that window.
  5. Press Save banner. Remove banner takes it away.

Get alerted

A monitor records outages but alerts nobody by itself. In Alerts → Alert rules use the Tell me if a site goes down template: it creates two rules, one for the outage and one for the recovery. If a monitor is not covered by any rule, the Uptime page tells you. See Alerts.

Delete on a monitor also erases all its history: checks, incidents and availability. It cannot be undone.
